Who we work with...
Mental health issues are an important part of many criminal cases; the incarceration rates of the mentally ill in America are staggering. At JLongtin Law, we know that everyone deserves a zealous defense, especially those in a vulnerable state because of their physical conditions or past traumatic experiences.
This can include a wide array of issues:
Addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behavior and leads to the inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or prescription medication. Substances may include alcohol, marijuana and other controlled substances.
Posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can occur when someone experiences or witnessed a traumatic event such as a serious accident, an act of terrorism, war/combat, a natural disaster, rape or other violent personal assault.
Traumatic Brain Injury
A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can be caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. The severity of a TBI may range from mild to severe depending on the extent of the injury.
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally, resulting in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs day-to-day functions and interactions.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative identity disorders are characterized by an involuntary escape from reality characterized by a disconnection between thoughts, identity, consciousness and memory.
Intellectual disability, or ID, is characterized by below-average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skills necessary for day-to-day living. ID can impact a person’s ability to learn, reason, make decisions, and solve problems as well as adaptive behaviors such as being able to communicate, interact with others, and take care of oneself.
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy and ability to think clearly. People with bipolar experience high and low moods, known as mania and depression, which are different from the typical mood swings that most people experience.
Personality related conditions, such as borderline or anti-social personality disorders
Personality disorders are characterized by difficulty regulating emotions. This difficulty can lead to impulsive behaviors and intense emotional responses to stressors and triggers.
