The Ethical and Legal Challenges of Diversion
And Then There Were Three
A look at what is being done to increase diversion efforts in Colorado and what it means for cases involving mental health. “Therefore, although a large portion of diversion is geared towards the clinical, attorneys still must do their jobs in the criminal courtroom. This can sometimes be easily accomplished, at other times is rife with ethical dilemmas and requires a new type of lawyering and judging, often uncomfortable for some in the legal profession.”
Unbundling Criminal Defense: Pro Se Assistance
As I have grown older, I have become more aware of the importance of being a member of a team. I still value my ability to be independent but knowing when a team is needed is crucial to both my personal health and the health of the firm.
Actual Intern Testimonial
For the longest time, the legal profession has struggled against pro se (self-represented) defendants in the criminal justice system. Although it is very important for defendants to consult with an attorney, especially in felony cases or other complex situations, sometimes people can handle their case themselves. JLongtin Law is currently working to make this process better for everyone- people, families, lawyers, and judges.
It is an honor to be working for a law firm that goes out of its way to engage in challenging work, and for a boss who adds to her own extensive workload so that she can help make Colorado a better place. There are not enough law firms like JLongtin Law. I will draw on this summer experience for the rest of my career.
My Own Mental Health Battle
“As long as the trauma is not resolved, the stress hormones that the body secretes to protect itself keep circulating, and the defensive movements and emotional responses keep getting replayed."
Summer 2019 Interns
I graduated with a degree in Ecology and Biodiversity; not exactly predestined for working in a law office. So why am I here?
