Even though there are six, we often think of change as a four-letter word. Change can be invigorating- but it is also sometimes desperately sad and full of loss. One thing that is sure in life is change, you cannot out-run it, you cannot avoid it, and trying to do either can destroy you. Change, much like joy and pain, is an essential feature of being alive.
JLongtin Law has been changing. We embrace change, but not for the sake of change alone- for the sake of evolution. JLongtin Law has always evolved to exceed our client’s and communities’ needs. We started with no office, to keep overhead low for our low-income clients; this allowed us to build our CARe Program. We moved from files to the cloud, and have always embraced technological advancement, to reduce paper waste and increase efficiency and responsiveness for our clients. We have now pivoted from a criminal defense firm, to a mental health criminal defense firm. Mental health criminal defense really is a different animal, and by focusing solely on this aspect of our practice, we can provide our clients with innovative solutions gained through focused expertise.
Our world is also changing. We are moving indoors, we are spending time alone or with only close family, we are reaching out to each other through technology more than ever before. Some of these changes from COVID19 will fade, as we return to our “normally scheduled program.” However, I think that some changes will stick- I think we will all find that we like the slower pace, the sunshine from our daily walks, the regular sleep, and the time with our kids/dogs/partners/selves. Yet, we also know that we will lose loved ones to this virus- some of the change to our economy could be devastating- there is so much fear.
Change is reality; it is good, it is bad, it is everything. The most important thing is to be present in the moment, in the now- be here and find joy. No one knows what the world will be like in two months, but you can find happiness in this moment, and worrying about the inevitable change coming will only raise your blood pressure. I hope that you can all see the beauty in change- the phoenix rising from the ashes of the past.
JLongtin Law was built to change, to evolve; we promise to use this evolution to care even more deeply, to defend, to protect and to serve in whole new ways, for our clients and their families. Stay safe and healthy friends.
